Greenhouse gas reduction, fuel savings and stability

  • Reducing the use of fossil fuels by using wing systems on ships is a goal being pursued by many companies around the world. But the multiplier gain from using Aquaforce's wingsail is fourfold.
  • 1. The first is that the wingsail is superbly efficient, which in turn delivers the most bang for the fewest bucks in terms of wing size and thus initial outlay.
  • 2. The fact that the wing can be deployed at the touch of a button. Once engaged it will catch whatever benefit is available, from the smallest zephyr, to a rollicking gale.

  • 3. The energy used when a vessel rolls is wasted. By removing vessel roll the energy being captured is pushing the ship forward instead of from side to side. The wingsail program is focused in part on developing this aspect of the wing system to maximise useful energy, thus improving performance.

  • 4. In turn, roll reduction will, by its very nature, increase vessel safety through improved stability and reduced movement on deck, making the seagoing workplace a safer environment or the sailing yacht a happier more comfortable place to enjoy being on the water. This all adds up to significant savings in fuel consumption and consequently reduced engine maintenance, substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a safer seagoing environment.
